When siblings stand shoulder to shoulder, nothing stands a chance against them — and this was the exact case for two puppy siblings that shared a bond, unlike anything their rescuers had ever seen.
Star and Denver are a pair of puppies who were born into a litter of 8. Unfortunately, at just 3-months-old, they were abandoned alongside their mother on the streets of rural Louisiana. Thankfully, the big family was quickly found and rescued, eventually finding their way to Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, California. It was there, the team quickly realized that Star stood apart.
If not for the kind couple who, after finding them, ended up fostering the entire family, they might not have survived.
The staff quickly realized Star was Different
While the rest of the young pups frolicked and played around the animal rescue center, Star instead hung back — displaying signs of special needs. That is when employees quickly realized that the 3-month-old terrier mix was deaf and partially blind.
However, staff members also observed that one of her siblings, Denver, had seemingly appointed himself as Star’s personal guide dog, helping his sister to navigate around her surroundings. He was not just her playmate, but also proudly serving as her “guiding star” while she moved around. The staff was blown away by this display.
“It’s really extraordinary,” Dora Dahlke, manager of adoption services at Helen Woodward, said in a press release. “We never stop learning from animals.”
The pair are now inseparable, Denver is always vigilant when it comes to his sister and if they ever do get separated, he always rushes to her side and nudging her so she knows he’s there.
Denver never leaves Star’s side
Thankfully, the sweet dogs have both been adopted together! The proud new pawrents will receive training from a local expert on how to raise a puppy with special needs, and, of course, Denver will also be there to support his sister at their new forever home.
“These two really can teach us all a thing or two about sibling love and how much we can achieve with the love of a good friend,” said Dahlke.
